This classic tugboat was built in 1912 by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company of Manitowoc, WI as the Richard Fitzgerald for the Chicago River & Indiana Railroad Company. While in Chicago the Richard Fitzgerald was used to tend to lighters. In 1916 she was sold to the Pringle Barge Line. The U.S. Shipping Board acquired the tug in 1918 and took her to Norfolk, VA for use as a fire tug. Kelley Island Lime & Transport Company then acquired the Richard Fitzgerald in 1919 and returned her to the Great Lakes. She was with T.L. Durocher & Company from 1929 to 1932 before being going back to Kelley Island Lime. From 1932 to 1939 the steam-powered tug sat inactive in Sandusky, OH. The Whitney Corporation purchased the tug in 1939, and from 1942 to 1946 she operated under charter to the Merritt, Chapman & Scott Corporation of Cleveland, OH. In 1946 the Richard Fitzgerald was purchased by the Great Lakes Towing Company of Cleveland, OH, and renamed Superior. In 1953, the Superior was converted to diesel power. Today, she is based in Milwaukee, WI and works on ship assist jobs, as well as serving as a lake tug on towing jobs.
