This useful tug was built in 1962 by the Toronto Drydock Company as the Niagara Queen for the Hydroelectric Power Commission of Ontario. She was later sold to the New York State Power Authority, where she retained her name. In 1999, she was acquired by the Geo. Gradel Company of Toledo, OH and renamed Mighty John III.

Mighty John III is active in the dredging and construction trades on Lake Erie, as a rare exception to the Jones Act.
