This tug was built in 1958 by Gulfport Shipbuilding as the Gatco Alabama for Gulf-Atlantic Transport. In 1977 she was sold to SeaBulk Towing of Fort Lauderdale, FL and renamed Ares. In 2009 she was purchased by Heritage Marine of Two Harbors, MN, and renamed Nels J. Dean Marine and Excavating of Mount Clemens, MI purchased the tug in 2017, renaming her Madison R.
The tug is active around the lower lakes performing contracting, towing, icebreaking, and assist work, and is based in Detroit.
